Introduction - Erase your Internet History, for good.
This tutorial will show you how to erase your
Internet History beyond recovery.
I will using Cyberscrub Privacy Suite to do this,
as I use it myself and personally recommend it.
The Image to the left is the first screen you see,
on launching the Application.
For any file to be deleted, the
Operating System has to write over
the "space" or track, it left on the hard drive.
If it is not, this "space" can be retrieved, using Data Recovery Software. Your Internet History will then visible.
Getting Started
If you click on "Erase beyond recovery" from the
image above you will see the page opposite.
Here you can define some pre sets
for how you want Cyberscrub to function.
You must have the Local C drive checked,
as your files containing your
Internet History are stored there.
The Delete Data - Wipe Options should also have
the four items checked, as per the opposite image.
I leave the recycle bin unchecked as I use
a different process within Cyberscrub
Priority Settings
Clicking the "priority settings" on the page above, brings up the page opposite.
I recommend that you close all applications and run this in real time.
This can be a lengthy process and take several hours, especially if
you are destroying your internet history for the very first time.
You don't want any other processes hogging your CPUs power.
Erasure Settings
On the getting started page ( two above) clicking
"Erasure Settings " will bring up the page opposite.
Here you can select how severe an algorithm
you wish to apply.Your files have to be
overwritten, not once, but several times.
I use the method highlighted opposite - although if
time is critical then I use the NAVSO P-5329-26. This algorithm is much quicker than the one highlighted.
Ready to go
Now you have set up how you want to erase
and the processing priority, it is time to
set up what you want to destroy, beyond recovery.
If you go back to the very first screen
you will see " Privacy Guard" on the left hand side.
Clicking the Icon, brings up the page opposite.
Advanced
Clicking "Advanced " will take you to the
Browser settings which must be configured.
Other settings can be configured here,
but for this tutorial, I will focus on the basics.
Next - Browser tab
Clicking "next " brings up the page opposite.
I will look at the application tab later but for now,
check internet explorer, or what ever browser you use.
Properties tab
Clicking "Properties" brings up the opposite page. The three top spaces need
to be populated. They are: history, cookies and Temporary internet files.
When you first open this they are unpopulated. By clicking "Auto populate"
Cyberscrub will find the path and locations for you. You can now see that
three separate files need to be overwritten, in order for your
internet history to be destroyed beyond recovery.
Applications tab
I have touched on this, simply because of the
vulnerabilities in other applications used on the web.
This is particularly relevant, when using Internet Explorer,
which is the most popular target for browser hackers.
As a browser it has many flaws and holes, some of which
have yet to be discovered. This is why so many updates
are released.
It is vital that the Adobe flash player is checked.
Over than half of the web’s top sites employ a little known use of
Adobe’s Macromedia Flash plug-in, to track users and store information about them.
Unlike normal browser cookies, Flash cookies are fairly unknown to the web user,
and they are not controlled through the cookie privacy tools in a browser.
This means that even if a user thinks they have deleted their computer of
tracking objects, chances are they have not.
They can be found on your PC by going to
C:\Documents and Settings\" your user name "\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\
Start Erasing
Clicking "next" on either the browser page or the
application page brings up the screen opposite.
Simply check scramble files and folders properties
and click Start.
After the erasing procedure has run,
you will need to restart your machine for this
process to be permanent. I prefer to
shut down my machine manually.
Completing its task
This is the screen you get when Cyberscrub is actually
doing its job. You can see it has three tasks to do:
Wipe files , Wipe registry entries and Scramble files.
With this high pressure algorithm selected,
it does all the above 3 times, then another 7 times
and finally and other 3 times.
This particular internet history has been destroyed, beyond all recovery.
